Did you know our Zoo sits on royal lands granted by King David Kalakaua in 1874 and was originally fishponds, lagoons and islands where the monarch maintained his own collection of exotic birds? Today it is the principal zoological institution of research in the State, and features over 1,230 animals in specially designed natural habitats, including endangered local species like the nene. One of their most popular features is the Keiki Zoo - a $5.1 million complex that opened in 2006 - where children can actually enjoy petting the animals or a koi pond with a tunnel that kids can climb through.
